They are in the kids’ room, I do have the vent blocked, but it doesn’t make a huge difference. They have to be up high too because of our dog. That really limits where they can be upstairs and downstairs is way too cold.

Re: Empty shell - Crab not to be found, possibly buried
I just peaked and he has buried again. Now I know and I’ll just leave him be. Tank is actually warming up a bit, at 72 now. The other one is at the back right under the heater.

I don’t think he was molting, normal color and no exoskeleton.
Thank you, I will look at those links!

Re: Empty shell - Crab not to be found, possibly buried
Not out of shell! While carefully digging I finally found him. In the third green shell we have. Hopefully I didn’t stress him out too much, but I’m sure I did. Put him underneath the hide and have given the girls strict instructions to leave them completely alone. In the meantime, any heater recomm...

Re: Empty shell - Crab not to be found, possibly buried
Gah. Sorry I am failing at this answering on my phone. My quoting did not work. I think the heater is Zoo Med. Any brand suggestions? The water is mixed at Petco in huge tanks. They sell it for $1.00 or $0.50 depending on if it’s fresh or salt water. Do the Zoo Med conditioners work? Or are they not...

Re: New crab owner - Substrate depth and mix
I realized that on further reading. Yes, they are all empty. I double checked and checked all the hiding spots too. Any ideas?

Empty shell - Crab not to be found, possibly buried
1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? 6” eco soil with a small amount of sand 2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read? Yes. Temp has been at about 70 and h...

Re: New crab owner - Substrate depth and mix
Well. We might have a molter. The one that we got up here at the pet store to keep the TX company switched out shells for a much bigger one this week. Went to change food/water out and checked the shells. The one that it switched into was empty as were all the others except the one that the TX switc...

Re: New crab owner - Substrate depth and mix
Also, I got fresh and saltwater from Petco. It’s meant for fish. Is that safe to use?

Re: New crab owner - Substrate depth and mix
So this is what I have right now. Need more climbing stuff I think and maybe a moss pit? How does it look? They are in the shelter thing right now, although the little one be buried. They were out exploring last night. I don’t think my heater is big enough. The lady told me a 5 gallon would be perfe...

Re: New crab owner - Substrate depth and mix
Thank you! That definitely helps!
The biggest has a shell that is about 1.5 inches tall, what should the substrate depth be? Does 5” sound good?

New crab owner - Substrate depth and mix
Hi everyone! On a whim I let my niece get a hermit crab while she was in TX with my mom. Ok quick research I made her get two so it wouldn’t be alone. On further research I’ve learned that they need a lot more than I originally thought, so here I am! I’m setting up the new tank (10 gallon) and have ...
