Well I got another crab

I wouldn’t call it an impulse purchase, but I just had to buy another crab today. I visited an exotics store in my city that I have never been to and they did have some crabbies, but unfortunately the tank was very inadequate. There was only one little guy in there that looked active, despite the co...

Re: surface molting or dead?

Hi there, I am so sorry to say but due to Scully not reacting at all to your touch and the fishy smell it is likely that Scully has passed… I am very sorry about this. If you would like to leave Scully alone for another day to make sure, then you are more than entitled to do so. A surface molter wou...

Re: DIY 40 Gal Tote Tank

This is so cool! How much was the tote? I never considered using one, but I've been wanting to upgrade my crabitat for a while Thank you so much! The tote was 40 USD, purchased in store at Home Depot. I would highly recommend the Sterilite brand of totes over anything else, and I would also recomme...

Re: DIY 40 Gal Tote Tank

I love your set up! I have been wanting to use totes for awhile now but I read they leak fumes from pvc they use to harden plastics. Have you noticed any kind of smell? I’m getting older and just can’t handle those heavy glass aquariums and loved the tote idea. How long have you had them in your to...

I need advice for my newest crab

Hi everybody! I just picked up two new purple pinchers from a novelty store in my town. One is large, active, and pretty healthy considering the conditions he was subjected to in the store tank. The other was a impulsive rescue; he’s very small and missing half of two of his front legs. I’m assuming...

Re: Cuttlebone Question

Pigging on calcium or mineral sources is very common in crabs. It's not a sign of deficiency but rather a craving, even crabs who haven't been deprived will go through phases of eating an entire dish at once. It’s likely a mixture of needing calcium and just being excited about a new food item. Cut...

Re: DIY 40 Gal Tote Tank

I love this idea, so much more cost effective than tanks... but i love to see Eugene, and if the lid is off the humidity will go down.... ^ That's true on the viewing angle. That's the major drawback of the tote on floor. Same situation for the double 29gal stand I have my crabitats on. You have to...

Cuttlebone Question

Hey guys! Not sure if this question belongs in Crab Behavior, but since it involves edible stuff I will post it here. I just moved my two PPs into a 40 gallon tank, in which I added a few pieces of cuttlebone for calcium. I had cuttlebone in my old 10 gallon, but it was definitely processed and more...

Re: DIY 40 Gal Tote Tank

That's awesome!! That's a perfect tote for this. How is the light string attached? I'm thinking the hermies will be climbing all over that. Thank you so much! I totally agree, I was so happy when I got it. I had to go to a couple Home Depots to find the one I was after. The lights came with their o...

DIY 40 Gal Tote Tank

Hey everyone! I’ve been working for the last few days on a 40 gallon tank for my two crabs, Scuttle and Tank. I’ve had them in a glass 10 gallon tank since I got them in Dec. 2020, they have molted 3 times since then and I felt it was time for an upgrade. 40 gallons is a bit overkill for their sizes...

Re: Don't ignore ants...

You got so lucky!! This was how my crab colony was killed. I didn't see the sugar ants in my tank because they were so tiny, until they moved their nest under the water bowls. Picked up and it was an explosion like you had, with so many babies. It was awful. Unfortunately they had been in there for...

Re: Don't ignore ants...

I commend your patience for them! I have zero when it comes to ants in the house and it's one of my worst fears with my hermit crab setups. I've had tiny ants set up shop in/around my aquarium equipment over the years and it took some doing to get rid of them. Easy compared to a crabitat though. If...
