Re: what do you think?

I don't have any crabbies yet, but I plan on a menu. I dunno if it'll work or not but I know I need to start somewhere, LOL. Keep a list of everything I have from calcium, to foraging, to protein/fruits/veggies and treats then sketch out something. This way between the freezer, fridge and cupboards ...

Re: How many different shell sizes?

That's a little tricky. I measure the opening of their current shell and estimate the fit. Is their current shell too big, just right or too small? If it's "just right" they can curl all the way into it with their big claw completely covering the opening. If too big, they will be way down into the ...

Re: Blanching and freezing fresh foods?

Do you know what they are using? There are many different chemicals, but most are pretty specific to mosquitos or only work in water on the larvae. They also tend to break down fairly quickly. According to the website it was a mixture of 3 main chemicals, mainly aimed at mosquitos but they said "3 ...

Re: Blanching and freezing fresh foods?

I live rurally. Our property is 7.5 acres, surrounded by hundreds of acres of farm land. There is spraying in the fields that butt up against our property, as well as in the ditches on our gravel road. We don't use any chemicals in our little piece of land, but I do use the leaves, fruits, veggies,...

Re: FYI: How much material for a 75g?

Once I add the substrate from my 40B, I should have 12-13" of sub. I probably won't use it all but it will be enough to seed the new tank with the bio active goodness in that tank. This will work great for me, but you could explain more about the "bio active goodness"...? Or did I miss reading it o...

Re: New or used tanks and how to inspect them?

The main thing I look for when buying used it to have clear, not stained seals. If they are stained blue or green that means someone at some point has used methylene blue or malachite green in the tanks. Both of these substances are common "remedies" in fishkeeping but are toxic to crabs. Even the ...

Re: Water Heaters????

That's totally over-thinking it. I wouldn't put fridge-temp water in, but room temp is fine. It will adjust to the temp of the tank fast enought, without causing any problems for the crabs. No need to check the temp of the pools. My apologies, I tend to do that. But also, my room temp is 71 F in wi...

Re: Water Filter VS Air Pump

Oh alright. You can probably tell I’ve never had fish... I’m sorta new to the website (Haven’t posted much/or met anyone) but is there a discord or something like that for questions? I would honestly love to talk about this with someone. Thanks for the reply! -Becca If you've never had fish, I'd sa...

Re: Blanching and freezing fresh foods?

People do use those little paint trays for food! You might need less than you think, but you can start with a tsp and adjust down as needed. Yeah since the trays are so cheap I figure I could try some out and if not that's okay but gotta start somewhere! LOL. I just ran into a problem though and I ...

Re: Appropriate stand for crabitat & more?

Motor - If all my crabs are up I will pull all the shells, and other stuff off the sub and turn the sub by hand. I read someplace to churn the sub every few months. I believe it's to aerate it to help prevent bacterial blooms. Since most of us have a bunch of crabs it's impossible. We have a lot of ...

Re: Appropriate stand for crabitat & more?

I "guesstimated" that one bag of play sand (50lbs) mixed with one hydrated brick of Eco Earth was close enough to a 5:1 for me. For my 75g tank I dumped a dry bag of sand into each half of the tank and then dumped to moistened bricks of EE onto each side. I hand mixed it together in the tank. I the...

New or used tanks and how to inspect them?

Hello again! So I've been on the look out for used 75G tanks first and I've been able to check out 3 of them in my area so far. All 3 have been Aqueon (sp?) and all 3 owners said the same thing for why they were getting rid of it. After X amount of time when they weren't able to take it back to the ...

Re: Suspended water pools to save floor space?

I would be terrified, LOL. That's just me! But I do think a 2nd level pool IS possible - I would, myself, shore it up on the bottom. I'd probably use natural sticks, branches as a "surface" for the bottom of the tank and have their legs go down to the sub. Think of it kinda like, building a small "t...

Re: How Much Salt

I currently use Instant Ocean and have always used a half cup of salt per gallon of water according to the instructions. Is this okay? I've been wondering if all this time I've been using the right amount. Jonathon This is correct, according to the box instructions - crabbies, however, ooy boy. I k...

Re: Water Heaters????

So yesterday I was doing a water change my crabitat and noticed that the water wasn't very hot, it was a cooler lukewarm temperature, not cold just not super hot. So I was wondering should you have water heaters in the pools? My pools are pretty large, and I'm planning on upgrading soon, so should ...
