Re: Newbie: Substrate Question

Fluker's is the only brand of hermit crab sand that is considered safe. It's totally fine to use straight out of the bag, but you can add some EE if you have it and want to use it. The 5:1 ratio that some groups recommend is playsand to EE, but Fluker's is already mixed. Just make sure you moisten i...

Re: New crab owner, Hello! :D

I have a saucer-style wheel, and my crabs love it too! Just choose whatever fits well in your tank.

Re: Hermit Crabs and Peanut Butter

I feed them either Kirkland organic (red label, ingredients peanuts and sea salt), or Trader Joe's (green label, ingredients peanuts). [We usually have at least 3 kinds of pb plus almond butter in our fridge & pantry, so none of it is bought specifically for crabs!] Not saying those brands are any b...

Mystery flies--help!!

About 2 weeks ago I made seafood stew for the crabs. It never molded, so I just left it in the tank (was planning to take it out this weekend). Today I opened the tank to discover swarms of tiny flying bugs on it (of course they dispersed before I could get a pic.) And since I haven't fed the crabs ...

The shed exo may also look like a dead crab.

All of that sounds great!

One thing I wanted to clarify--you should be dechlorinating both your fresh water and your salt water. :)

Re: Good groups?

I have seeds, worm castings, and calcium sources that stay in my tank 24/7, so a typical meal is a protein and a fruit/veggie/foraging item.

Re: should i move my hermit crabs??

When I'm rearranging, I always take the crabs out. This is because I usually take every single item out and rotate the substrate before putting things back in. (I only do this when none are buried/molting.) I feel that they would feel exposed if I left them in while I was taking literally everything...

Re: New crab buried under the water bowl

Just a thought about doubling up for in the future: my water dishes are actually old feta cheese containers. I have them side-by-side in a plastic container from the dollar store. So it serves the same purpose as doubling up with the same container, but because they don't nest, it's super easy to pu...

Re: Soap or no soap for washing dishes?

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't wash/rinse my crab water dishes regularly, only if they stink. (They had dragged food in there and it was decomposing. I had to fill the whole thing with baking soda and hot water to get rid of the smell.) I just dump them and refill.

Re: What are Your Crabs’ Favorite Foods?

Just gave mine 'seafood stew' as a special treat for the M's gotcha day! They swarmed the food dish within minutes and carted off pieces to eat. Kendall's already coming back for seconds! 'recipe': I took a bunch of fishy/ocean food items and put them in a mason jar. Added boiling water and let it s...

Black eyed susans?

Every year we have hundreds of black-eyed susans that grow in our yard. I didn't see them on either list and was wondering if they'd be safe for crabs?

Re: Beta Fish Questions

About tanks and snails: Yes, a betta (male or female) and a snail in a 10 should be fine. If you're planning to get live plants, they *will* come with tagalong baby snails. And you may end up with a population explosion. (If you have tons of baby snails and need to get rid of them, try an assassin s...

That's crazy lol! Do you flavor your popcorn with anything?
Sometimes I have and sometimes I haven't, but they only ever nibble at it.
