Re: Can anyone tell the species?
I’m thinking they’re ruggies, Coenobita rugosus. Please don’t buy from pet stores, all crabs sold are wild caught except Mary Akers captive bred babies. HCA has an adoptions section as well as LHCOS has a free adoption program.

Re: Marine tank growing mold
What do you mean marine tank? Do you have marine hermit crabs or land crabs? A marine tank would have algae. If you have land crabs, mold does happen with the high humidity. Some things such as natural wood mold easily, or if it’s on the substrate it could be old food that they’ve left behind. Where...

Re: My hermit crab has switched genders!
Crabs can’t change genders, you may just not have noticed the gonopores previously. Can you post a picture of the eggs? If they’re in the water there’s a chance it could be grain mite eggs.

How deep is the substrate? How much protein are you feeding?
Also it’s not recommended to bathe or play with your crabs, it stresses them out. Also substrate doesn’t need to be replaced, it can be used for years.

Re: Crab Leg Fell Off
I follow LHCOS guidelines so I’m the outlier here, but it’s no harm in providing more space and foraging opportunities. They are taken from the wild and I think we should do our best to replicate that the best we can. I also have had no issues with my substrate holding shape, the water has no where ...

Re: Crab Leg Fell Off
4 crabs in a 20 gallon is too many, we have to adhere to the 10 gallon per crab rule when using small tanks. As well as for their diet, it should be 50% protein. I would be offering more things such as dried fish and dried insects they can be found on Etsy. Staples like leaf litter, worm castings, g...

Re: Claw Injury?
How positive are you that he did actually molt? Between how black and ragged that wound looks, the ashiness of the exo that's showing, and that he's still missing those two limbs on that side, I'm thinking that he hasn't managed to molt yet. I'm not doubting that he may have disappeared for a bit, ...
