Hi all, I'm in Australia and haven't been able to find ANY appropriate shells for my jumbo hermit crab. I think they need a 3" opening, and I believe the current shell is an apple snail shell? So it turned out one of the medium ones was ready to come up! But you're absolutely right, it is quite disconcerting. I'm still a little worried about the other 2 who I still haven't seen yet (another med, and a small one), but I now have soooo many shells, and a heap of yummy foods on rotation, so ...

Background info: I have 4 crabs, have had them almost 2 months now, there's one big one (bit larger than a ping pong ball in shell), 2 medium size ones (half the size of the big one), and one tiny one (half the size of the medium ones). Hi.. the HCA actually does not encourage the PPDR method. It is better to get them into optimal conditions as fast as possible. If they need to molt, holding them off from it is dangerous. They will know to eat/drink enough before they do. They can also come up "during" the mold to refresh themselv...
