Re: Correct Hermit Crab Food
I'm new to hermit crabs and still learning but what I've been doing to give mine a variety of fresh (and cheap) fruits and veggies is to go to my local grocery store that has a decent salad bar and go down the line getting one or 2 pieces of about everything (spring mix greens, spinach, bell pepper,...

Interesting night of crab watching
So there was a squabble last night over Myrtle's discarded shell. Ian had moved into it after Myrtle took a new shell but she apparently still has some attachment issues with it. They both repeatedly checked out all 10 shells in the shell shop over and over again. At one point they squared off and b...

Myrtle is back!
I'm happy to report that Myrtle reappeared this evening after being underground for exactly one month. She also changed to a bigger shell. That was my clue she was back. I saw a shell I didn't recognize mixed in the shell shop. I started looking around the tank and could see the top of Ian's shell i...

We have a molt!
I'm brand new to crabbing and have only had my 2 for a month. After going from the carrier into their new tank, Myrtle went underground the next day and I haven't seen her since. Ian was just hanging around the tank being a crab until he discovered the hanging moss cup. He dug straight to the bottom...

Re: Is this normal?
Thank you so much! I'll stop being a nervous Nelly and leave him be. Before I mounted the moss cup I drilled several holes on every side plus the bottom for ventilation so the moss wouldn't mold. There shouldn't be any water pooling around him.

Is this normal?
I've only been a crab owner for 3 weeks so I don't know if I should be worried or not. I brought them home from a beach gift shop. Myrtle went underground 2 days after going into their new crabitat. It's been 2 weeks so I don't think she's de-stressing. I think finally having enough substrate trigge...

Thank you My camera really didn't do him justice. He's a vivid orangish red color.

This is Ian
This is Ian. We named him after the hurricane since we got him the day before it hit Myrtle Beach where we were vacationing. We all hunkered down and weathered the storm together. Myrtle has been MIA for 4 days now. As soon as she surfaces I'll try to post a pic of her. I'm not sure if she buried to...

Re: New to Hermies
Thank you for the tips and advice. Another member suggested more climbing space also. You can't see it in the pic, but I have fish net draped over the side of the moss cup for them to climb up. I also have a cholla log on order as I couldn't find any on the shelf that wasn't as big as my arm lol. I'...

Re: Newbie to Crab Care
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same thing. I tried to find a driftwood centerpiece with several branches but I had no luck finding one for a 10 gal tank. That's why I ended up with the bridge. At least it's something. I don't think you can see it from the pic but I have fish net draped ove...

Newbie to Crab Care
I posted an introduction but I think I put it in the wrong thread/forum. I'm still figuring it all out lol. Anyway, I've never had hermies before and I'm doing my best to learn about their care. Here is a pic of my 10 gal crabitat that has 2 very small (quarter size) PP's in it. Any suggestions or f...

I don't think I'm posting in the right thread. I'm still trying to figure it out lol. Anyway, here is a pic of my crabitat. I'm brand new to keeping hermit crabs so any feedback is appreciated. Re: New to Hermies
Thank you! My 4 y/o granddaughter lives with us and was with us at the beach when we got them. She's fascinated by them. She just wishes they would move around more lol. I have found this to to be a teachable moment with her. Since they're only really active at night bedtime is our nightly routine w...

New to Hermies
I've never had hermies before but always wanted some. I went on vacation last week and saw them for sale in every beach store I went into. I tried to talk myself out of getting any due to not wanting to encourage the inhumane commercial trade but I felt bad for the poor things and rescued 2 of them....
