Re: Newbie: Substrate Question

Fluker's is the only brand of hermit crab sand that is considered safe. It's totally fine to use straight out of the bag, but you can add some EE if you have it and want to use it. The 5:1 ratio that some groups recommend is playsand to EE, but Fluker's is already mixed. Just make sure you moisten ...

Re: Newbie: Substrate Question

Hello all, I'm about to be a new crab owner and have been preparing. This site has been a great help. However something I would like clarity on is substrate. 1. I purchased Fluker's Hermit Beach Sand and also blocks of eco earth. I've seen about the 5:1 ratio, but do I actually physically mix the s...

I guarantee that there are many more than that who die between the time they are taken from their natural habitat and the time they arrive at the store.
I am fully aware, I am just saying that very few die from the time they are sent from FMR to the time they arrive at our store.

Re: Hermit crab buried but Crabitat needs to be cleaned

The flies won't be in the dirt, so changing it won't affect them being attracted to the tank. They're going to be going after the food, or will be attracted just because the tank needs to be moist and warm for the hermits. Drain flies need standing water to reproduce and the larvae looks like tiny ...

Re: LED lights?

Yes! They're great for offering illumination without affecting the temperature or humidity in the tank, since they run pretty cool. It'll act as daylight for the crabs so shouldn't be used at night. Could you like the inside of the tank like it's a rooms ceiling? I have been looking at lighting opt...

Re: Molting...or gone?

Oh gosh! I'm sure that was traumatizing [emoji24] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I cried so hard, I was worried about my baby! I cried myself to sleep every night hopping I would wake up with him on my chest cuddling with me.. I check on him many times a day, just to see what he's doing, and ma...

Re: I did a good thing today! by KyMart

That is heartbreaking, really. So many crabs taken from the wild, and the death rate prior to getting to the store is tragic. We rarely ever have any die on their way here, maybe a few a month.. It's still sad tho.. We got a little guy in two weeks ago that left his shell, I gave him a quick bath a...

Re: Molting...or gone?

Oh thank goodness! [emoji175] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I was worried Frog got out a few weeks ago (he showed no signs of molting), I have a bad feeling and went to put new water in and spilt the water in the tank, I was worried about flooding, and I had all crabs underground. So, I took e...

But anyways glad your shop has someone working towards the wellbeing of these little guys in any capacity!!
Me too! I try to educate customers as much as possible, and change is coming soon! My sister is on board (she works there too, and is an adult, so that's helpful!

Re: I did a good thing today! by KyMart

That would help alleviate the suffering of those crabs under your care certainly! However, it does not do anything about the problem Curly brought up :( Better some change than none of course but the crabs are still being taken from their natural habitat. Instead of full education how about just a ...

Re: Molting...or gone?

So my oldest Male crab is molting atm, and this is his first time (in my care) and my first time seeing it! Except...I can't see him? I can't even find the hole he climbed into! He's not on any of the sides of the tank and I haven't seen him anywhere else. Is that normal, or is it possible he got o...

I'm having my dad help with this, hes the one who suggested it, but he meant turning over the eco earth and play sand, not switching it
Oh! So you're going to mix it up, and re moisten it a little???
