Re: Possibly flooded tank?

Adding dry sand worked well! Thanks for the advice!

Re: Possibly flooded tank?

Alright, I'll try adding more dry sand and probably some coco fiber too, once I'm back at home. And I have a mesh lid but it's already mostly covered in saran wrap. Part of the lid isn't because I don't want the lamp that serves as the light for the tank to, I don't know, set the saran wrap on fire ...

Possibly flooded tank?

I added some more freshwater to the substrate in my tank this morning while I fluffed it up. Clumsy me, I dropped the bottle that I was using to pour the freshwater out of. There wasn't much left in it, so I thought the substrate would be fine and still at the "sandcastle consistency". Now I usually...

Scuttle is back up from a molt already?

Hey everyone! My oldest hermit crab Scuttle just came back up early this morning with both lower pieces of his back legs (the ones that my newer crab, now named Ravager, ripped off) completely regrown! He seems to be doing well so far, already eating and moving around. I was really starting to miss ...

Re: Traveling between states, both crabs assumed to be molting

For anyone wondering what the temperature/humidity of my tank is currently at:

Tank temp is at 82° F and the humidity is at 85%.

Traveling between states, both crabs assumed to be molting

Back in June I drove down to the state of Delaware for a two-month vacation. I took the crabs' tank with me, safely strapped into the backseat of my car as I drove. In a couple of days I'm driving back up to Pennsylvania, but both of my crabs are currently underground and I have not heard them movin...

Re: Possible Fighting?

I think they've stopped fighting over shells now, but I noticed that my new crab is too small for Scuttle's old shell. He did start digging a cave, so he might be getting ready for a molt so he can grow into it. I'm also unsure if Scuttle will be able to regrow his legs or not. Will they grow back o...

Re: Possible Fighting?

I don't know exactly what type of shell it is and I don't know how to post photos here on a phone, but the shell is spiky and has a side where it's long and pointed. I did find a way to isolate my new crab without moving him, though. I got a wooden board that was tall enough to prevent him from clim...

Re: Possible Fighting?

Scuttle's shell was a non-painted shell that I picked up off the ground while at a beach last year (this was the shell he moved into after he left his painted shell). The new crab's original shell was also non-painted. I don't have any shells similar to the shell that was stolen, but there's 3 shell...

Re: Possible Fighting?

The new crab must've torn off part of Scuttle's leg. I know that Scuttle dropped part of his leg a few weeks ago, but I found another leg segment above the substrate and I saw poor Scuttle moving around in a tiny cramped shell with two leg segments missing! The new crab took over Scuttle's shell and...

Possible Fighting?

Hi, I just brought home a new medium-sized purple pincher last night and isolated him in my tank overnight. This morning I let him out of the isolation area (part of a clean, washed-out milk jug) and let him explore more of the tank. He started digging and taking dips in the salt bath, and even trie...

Re: Lost legs?!

HOLD ON, I think Scuttle is fine. I took a closer look at the parts I found and they looked real. It turns out that they weren't, because Scuttle came back up just now and he had all his parts. I do know that the parts I found were from Scuttle, because my other crab is much smaller and wouldn't hav...

Re: Lost legs?!

I've located Scuttle and he's alive, but all I did was mist him with freshwater a bit. He moved, but I looked at the leg pieces I found. Two were actual leg pieces and one seemed to be the lower part of the big pincher claw. These are actual parts, not hollow parts left behind from Scuttle's recent ...

Lost legs?!

Hey, I just checked on my tank as I was getting ready to go to bed, and my hermit crab Scuttle had gone back underground... and I found two crab leg pieces in the sand?! I don't know why they came off or if Scuttle is okay. I didn't disturb the area where Scuttle dug down, but I think this might be ...

Re: Update on Molting Crabs!

I recently put out extra bits of fruits and veggies in my food dishes, and added small slices of salmon (the fish) to the mix for extra nutrients just in case. Scuttle seems to really like the salmon, I saw him nibbling on it before he started climbing on things and digging small holes everywhere :)...
