Re: Substrate Issues + Frightened Crabbies

If you want to save some steps, it's perfectly fine to use your tap water, as long as you treat it with with a dechlorinator. My go to dechlorinator is Prime. Just use 2-3 drops per gallon and you're good to go. To keep your gauges out of the sand, check out my pics. The little basket is from the d...

Re: Substrate Issues + Frightened Crabbies

Glad you got your sand to a good consistency. [emoji846] Throw away plastic tubs/containers are great hidey spots! Use a Cool Whip container, cut an opening out on the side, turn it upside down, and you have an instant cave. I also use those small containers you get microwaveable mac & cheese in, a...

Re: Substrate Issues + Frightened Crabbies

I forgot to ask? What type of lid do you have on your tank? If it's mesh, make sure it's completely wrapped in saran wrap to keep the sub moist. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk I have a glass folding lid, which keeps the humidity in well. Usually, I try to leave it open a bit to ventila...

Re: Substrate Issues + Frightened Crabbies

It sounds like you may have put your substrate in too dry. For sandcastle consistency, you want it pretty wet. If you're squeezing it and it's not holding its shape, it's not wet enough. You just don't want the sub dripping water when you squeeze it. If your crabs are up, I would temporarily move t...

Is this a hermit crab myth?

In an article I was reading: "On the other end of the spectrum, an overabundance of calcium-rich foods can also contribute to cannibalism. Hermit crabs, especially the larger species, require a diet rich in calcium to support shell growth and development. When they consume excessive amounts of calci...

Substrate Issues + Frightened Crabbies

First of all, my substrate has been too dry, particularly near the heaters. The unusual thing is that I have correct sized pools and the humidity has been super high (according to my hydrometer, which I think might be messed up). I've been pouring water into the substrate and stirring it up, particu...

Re: My substrate will NOT retain moisture

There is no 'too high' when it comes to humidity. Sometimes items are more likely to mold, but the humidity is not harmful. My tank has been in the 90s for months now. Yes it is safe to pour water along the edges while crabs are underground. Just be cautious that you don't add too much water and ca...

Re: Lots of tunnel digging!

Ok thanks! Glad I know that now! 😬 Thankfully I did NOT put my substrate in completely dry, it still had moisture. About how much water should I pour in to keep it the right consistency, and about how often? How much is too much?

Foods your PPs go crazy for?

Hey everyone! I'm about to buy a pack of crab food I have the choice of a lot of different kinds of freeze-dried fish, as well as different dried foraging plant mixes. I would like to get foods that my crabbies will go crazy over, so I was wondering what you guys' PPs like best (fish and protein sou...

Re: Lego climbing structures

I have lots of unused legos in my basement, and just thought to give my hermies some hideouts and climbing blocks to play with, but found some sites saying they were unsafe and some saying they were perfectly fine, should i keep it safe and not use legos? As a lego enthusiast, it's hard for me to t...

Re: Surplus of poop

My crabs always poop orange whenever I give them carrots haha. I've noticed other colors too but haven't figured out which foods cause that.
