Re: suddenly burrowing and not eating
Thanks. So the burrowing is also okay? Are they both getting ready for a molt?

suddenly burrowing and not eating
Hi all! about 2-3 weeks ago I noticed my hermit crabs didn't eat anything from their food plate, but I shrugged it off. When I offered food again and checked on it the next day I noticed that they didn't eat any either. Then both of them started burrowing. Plum came up after three days and I gave hi...

is bottled water with added minerals safe?
HI all! For a long time I have been using Kirkland signature bottled purified water for my hermie's freshwater dish, but recently I read it closer and discovered it had "minerals added for taste" :( That's not safe...but is it? I really hope I haven't been feeding my hermies dangerous water! Thanks!

Re: Hermit crab moving back into a painted shell after changing!!
Okay thanks! Good to know that it won't harm him immediately. I boiled the shells in salt water, I think it'll help. It's so sad how horrible people treat them at gift shops. In the place that we got Kermit from, there were about 50 crabs, with shells all painted, and there was no substrate and mini...

Hermit crab moving back into a painted shell after changing!!
I got one of my hermit crabs, Kermit, from a gift shop in florida. He came in a painted shell that was too tight for him. Kermit molted and I expected him to change shells, but he still stayed in his old one. Yesterday, Kermit finally moved out of his way too small painted shell. I checked inside of...

Hermit crab going back under after molting
One of my medium sized hermit crabs molted a little longer than a month ago, and about 1-2 weeks ago he and another bigger crab both went under again. I think the smaller crab isn't molting, since he just molted recently, but the big one might be. They usually don't go under for so long at a time......

Re: C Reptitherm UTH for 6 inch deep sand?
Ok! That's what I did, I pasted the pad on the side of the tank, but when I felt around in the air around the heating pad, it didn't feel much warmer. Is it supposed to not warm the air or am I doing something wrong? Ps. I don't have a top for my tank so maybe that means something...??

C Reptitherm UTH for 6 inch deep sand?
I recently bought a reptitherm UTH heating pad for my hermit crabs, and the manual says that the substrate has to be no deeper than 2 inches. But my crabitat has about 6 inches of sand and cocofiber. Can I still use the heating pad even though my substrate is deeper than it says it can be?

How to tell species?
I have 2 hermit crabs who's species I don't know, but would like to find out. Does anyone have a link or guide or something that identifies hermit crabs? I don't know how to post pictures so I can't put any here...how do you post pictures?

Re: Hi! New to hermit crabs. A little concerned for my little guys.
I've also learned that lots of different hermit crab species are called different things, like pps and violas-but I couldn't find an example of these so I have no idea what species Kermit and Plum are. Does anyone have a link to identifying species of hermit crabs or something?

Re: Hi! New to hermit crabs. A little concerned for my little guys.
Ohhh, that makes sense! One last question-sorry I'm asking a lot-we put a mossbed and a coconut hut where kermit started burrowing. What if he finishes molting and comes up-only to be blocked by these things? Should I move the stuff or will he find a way around?
