Re: inactive for 4 days

It's funny, because people talk about 'pre-molt' behavior, but I have never really seen it in my crabs. Sonny will sometimes dig a couple of 'test holes' before he goes down for a long time. But other than that I either haven't noticed or he doesn't do anything differently. So as HG3 said, differen...

Re: inactive for 4 days

Hello! Have you got your crab recently? She might just be exhibiting pre-molt behaviors different than the other crabs. If you wave your hand around her does she react? If she does, I think she is fine. You could put some food nearer to her. Have you calibrated your hygrometer? Hope this helps! So ...

inactive for 4 days

Hi y'all, seeking some advice about the inactiveness of one of my crabs. For some background, I have a 20 gallon long tank with one large crab (shelby), who went down to molt about 2 weeks ago, and one small to medium sized crab (rolly polly). I have about 7 inches of substrate with a 5:1 ratio of p...

Lighting

Hi all, quick question- the room in which my tank is kept has little natural light and I worry that it's too dark for my crabs. Should I be installing lighting? And if so, what kind?

Re: Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

People think crabs are cheap pets, but getting them initially setup can cost a bit, so I totally understand. As long as a crab didn't surface molt, there is no need to isolate him from the others. If they dug down, and came back up, their exo should be all hardened and ready to go. Sent from my Mot...

Re: Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

Great, thank you! I will definitely be buying the tank in store from petsmart this time around lol. I have spent an embarrassing amount of money on these guys in the process of trying to figure everything out! wow!! My other crab just came up from molting as we speak! I am so relieved but feel even...

Re: Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

Ps- if you do get a 40 gal breeder, don't buy the Aqueon glass lid for it. It doesn't fit! It's like a cm or two too big. I read in reviews that's happened to a lot of people with that lid. So weird! Re: Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

I think it might be more of a hindrance than anything. It creates air flow at the bottom, which might dry your sand out, or let the sand leak out. I'd stick with a regular aquarium. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk Makes sense, I'll return it and check out the website you sent me. One of...

Re: Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

I've never heard of that one before, but just looked it up. You def don't need the sliding tray. So if you return it, you can grab a regular 40 gal breeder tank instead. I got my glass lid for my breeder tank online at That Fish Place/That Pet Place. [emoji846] Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Ta...

Re: Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

Ooooh nice, I just looked it up. I think I’ll get that one, thank you! I too would be too lazy lol. Another thing, I’m pretty sure I ordered the incorrect terrarium so I’ll be returning it. I thought that I could just not use the sliding tray at the bottom and it would be fine, but I’m worried it m...

Re: Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

I know Curly said she plugs/unplugs her uths as needed. I'm too lazy for that lol, so I use thermostats. Here's the brand I've been using for years, and it works well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01I15S6OM?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk Ooooh nice...

Thank you so much for the helpful info! Also, how do you maintain the ideal temp without using a thermostat?

Heating mat size/watts for 40 gallon tank

Hi all, I am new to the hermie world and, unfortunately, I was initially misled by the information, as well as the lack of, given to me by petsmart and since then I have gone down rabbit holes researching proper care for hermies. I have learned a lot but still have a ways to go. It all started by my...
