Moss pit

Post by hermitnewb » Sun Jun 09, 2013 1:28 pm

I want to make my guys a MOSS pit because I've heard others talk positively about it. Can anyone give me more details of theirs? A pic of it in the tank would help tons to give me an idea of where to put it. I am looking up the moss i bought, so let me know if it's okay to use or if i should use a different kind.Exo Terra Forest Mosshttp://www.petsmart.com/produc...sp?productId=3092176If no please suggest another. please let me know....do you add water? if yes salt or fresh?how often do you change the moss or add water?what do they do with the moss pit?anything else i should know

Moss pit

First what type of moss is it?I get sphagnum. I usually go with this Zilla Beaked Moss.Freeze it for a day to kill any bugs and eggs and put it in. I change about every month.I hydrate it with saltwater to prevent mold, but the moss will absorb moisture from the air. For a while mine wouldn't come out of the moss pit. They would just sit there and eat the moss and bury to the bottom of the shower caddy.Speaking of containers, I use a corner clear plastic shower caddy from WalMart. I use it as a second level which means it is stuck on the side of the tank in the air by suction cups making a new ledge or level. I just picked a spot in the tank where I could easily put stuff for the crabs to reach the edge. I have a vine going up to it as well as a fake plastic rock stack and vines hanging out of the holes in the caddy.

I got the zoomed terrarium moss! My crabs absolutely love it ! You can get a clear suction cup corner shower caddy; best ones are with the holes so your crabs can easily grip to them

for some reason I can not find a suction cup caddy that isn't huge. like 9x5x5, i hate going in walmart because it gives me anxiety since it's always packed but I think I may have to this weekend.

check other store like dollar trees places like that sometimes have scaled down versions. I also have things under mine to support it cause it never fails they end up sloping. I use cake tiers or other fish tank decorations like these dead wood things. you can also control the hight of your corner caddy by the amount of substrate you have under it. I also have a piece of slate rock under my decoration that is holding it up to keep it from sinking down. I put eco earth in mine and dried leaves, just don't want the extra expense of buying moss and dealing with having to mess with it getting it ready { sometimes they have bugs } I also put a rock in mine to help them get in it so they don't have such a big step
