aquarium ornaments

Hello, I put this adorable little castle aquarium ornament in my crabs tank. It is so cute. Also has the added benefit of openings to provide hiding places for my teeny crabs. I wonder though if the material that aquarium ornaments are made of is appropriate for hermit crabs. Does any one have any advice? thanks, Lisa

Well I have a tall rock that also has the little holes in it for my babies to go under, and I just made sure to put it in boiled water to be sure its clean. I'm probably not the person to tell you about the material of the castle though, lol sorry. I known you could use my rock for fish, but i mean at petsmart they boil hamster tunnels and put those in fish tanks for them to go through, so lol, and actually thats not a bad idea considering, but anyway back to the point, i've never really found anything "specifically" for hermits to use because they could be used for lizards and stuff like the pools and everything. I hope I helped a little, lol. Trust you'll probably get a MUCH better answer than the one I have, but every little bit helps. I hope you get the answer your looking for!

In general what is ok for fish is ok for hermit crabs. Boil anything new, and i think thats about it. It would be a very very determined hermit crab to break off a piece of an aquarium ornament.

Yep, I would also assume if its safe to go into a fish aquarium, it should be ok. As mentioned already, boil it to clean and disinfect first. Ive noticed some ornaments have sparkles... I'd make sure that stuff doesnt come off when rubbed. You dont want them eating that.

the only thing I can say is that if its not something they can grab with there claws like ceramic or a flat surface than they will keep trying and fall off alot and then they lose interest.and I learned the hard way that was before I found this site.I call that the year of crabbing blindly LOL
