How do you move your tanks?

Post by Guest » Thu Nov 27, 2008 1:52 am

I was just wondering how everyone moved their tanks. I can't imagine anyone carrying a 75 gallon filled with sand. I ask because i have a 29 gallon with oak trim that is heavy as it is and my mom thinks i am crazy when i want to put a hundred pounds of sand in it!

How do you move your tanks?

I moved my 80g filled with all the substrate, but minus all they toys ect. with the help of two other people. We slid it onto a board, with a piece of styrofoam between so that the bottom doesn't crack and then carried it. It wasn't something I'm looking forward to do again, but it worked. Putting it on the board takes the strain from the tank itself. You can use a blanket instead of the styrofoam.

My BF moved the 29 gal full of sand (and crabs) twice. He has big muscles LOL He said it weighed about 100 lbs.

It's best to wait until you're doing a clean when you've removed some of the substrate and the tank is empty or at minimum, lighter.I bought what's called Sliders, got them at Walmart. They're smooth bottomed discs that you put under the corners and you can slide furniture up to several hundred pounds (depending on the size sliders you get). I used them under my cabineted 29g and 72g tanks. Granted they still require some effort pushing because of the weight but they do work. I was able to move both tanks on wall to wall carpet. There are several different kinds, just google furinture slides or sliders.
