I'm so excited.I was having a very hard time solving the heating problem in my tank and it wasn't an issue this summer but now that winter is setting in AND FAST! I needed a major solution. Luckily the pet store owner raises Skinks and has a fiberglass terrarium and he suggested greenhouse cable and explained his setup and how to make it so you protect it from the hermit crabs. As soon as I get a chance (my cast comes off my foot today and hopefully no more wheelchair! yay!) I'm going to start my deep clean. I got my HUGE brick of fiber bedding last week with the seabird poop.

Ugh, I broke my foot during rehearsal. Which sucked. The brick is the equivalent of 10 bricks apparently. I'm going to rehydrate it in a 50 gallon garbage pail.Greenhouse cable is something that gardeners bury in the dirt and it keeps the soil at a constant temperature. It is self regulating to about 72 degrees.

I'm.... not so sure that is a good idea.Since I am not quite sure what the cable is made of, I am just assuming that it is pinchable/climbable. The crabs are going to pinch, taste, and climb anything in the tank with them.Good luck with it, and if it works, you may have found a good thing.

Actually we talked (the pet store guy and I) very extensively about set up and you're right, an unprotected cable in the substrate would be a very bad idea for a number of reason. Fortunately he gave me advice on how to protect the cable from the crabs and also how to protect the power cord that runs up and out of the tank. (Although the cord was the least of my worries as many people have tank items with cords (like water filters).I need a couple more items to get it started and I will post a play by play how-to. Please don't worry, I'm more of a stickler than most crabbers i know for safety. It's so nice to see other people who are careful like that too.
