Forest Bed vs Eco Earth

Post by Crabby Abby » Fri Feb 09, 2007 2:59 am

Have I figured out the difference between Forest Bed and Eco Earth? I usually only find Forest Bed locally so I've been using that, however my last purchase yielded a 3pk of Eco Earth. In working with the EE and comparing two tanks I noticed the consistency of it is lighter and finer, more like an actual soil whereas the Forest Bed seems a bit more dense and contains longer fibers. It almost seems that the EE was sifted.Anyone else notice this?

Forest Bed vs Eco Earth

I have never tried Forest Bed, but I often refer to my EcoEarth as dirt.I have also used a potting soil mix that is basically Eco Earth type in texture.
I have had hermit crabs for a couple of years and still have most of my originals. I joined LHC over a year ago and have learned a lot about crab care there. I have about 50 crabs (PP, Straw and E) in my 130 gallon tank that is a feature point of my living room.

yes my EE is very dirt like. I don't know what he plus and minuses are. I guess I never thought it would be 'different'

I've used Eco Earth before, but it wasn't until this use - and having the Forest Bed in another tank to compare it to - that I noticed what the difference was.

I've used both. My crabs tend to burrow more with the Forest Bed than the Eco Earth, for reasons to which I have no idea. Maybe the coconut is sweeter!

When you say Forest Bedding are you referring to the Bed-A-Beast? I've used both but not at the same time so I didnt get to compare them side by side but the differences must not have been too noticable to me b/c I didnt see much of a diffence. I have a whole tank full of burrowed probably molting crabs right now in the EE so I dont think if there is a difference it would be enough to effect the crabs to much...Just my 2 cents.

Nope I actually mean Forest Bed. I'm not saying it's a serious difference or that one is better than another, just that for the first time I realized there IS a difference.Personally I think I prefer the Forest Bed. It seems a little heavier to work with and holds water better. I also like the fibers in the substrate. My current EE tank doesn't have any.
