Deepclean/mite prevention tips?

Post by cluelesscrabber » Thu Nov 29, 2007 12:52 pm

i'm doing the deepclean this saturday, to rid my tank of the second mite invasion. I know I should scrub with vinegar, hose-down, but is there anything else I can do to really keep the mites away? any cleaning agents I can use, such as baking soda or something? any cleaning tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

Deepclean/mite prevention tips?

Boil woods and decor if they can withstand it. Some thick resin items can be gently boiled for a few minutes as well. Thoroughly wash your tank. Pinch a wet paper towel into a small wad and run it tightly along the underside of the rim and across and down all the sealant. Do it a few times if you have to. If there's any in the minute grooves of the sealant they can easily be missed. Rinse your tank well. If it's of a size that you can stand it on it's end or hold it at the sink and blast with the sink hose, you'll stand a better chance of washing all the buggers out.If you have anything you can't boil, I remember Jedediah once said that some bugs can withstand freezing temps so freezing as a method of killing them is out and she instead suggested sealing unboilable items in large ziplocs for at least a month and using something else in the interim. And despite what I just said, I'd freeze any EE bricks prior to use just in case. Whether it works or not, it certainly can't hurt.

At least 24 hours in the freezer is better. I know that some mites that live on rodents can survive even that, they (and their eggs) die after 72 hours.
