Adopting is is a great way to bring home new companions and help out crabs in need! We have no restrictions here, but we do ask that you only offer to adopt when you have the space to do so, and you've had enough experience where you'll be able to give them a safe and stable home. Most of the time the crabs you will be asked to adopt are going to be someone's beloved pet that they are no longer able to care for. Some of these crabs will have been with the same owner for years and possibly over a decade, and are part of their family. Make sure you're doing the right thing and can care for them properly before offering to take them in.

Please post in the thread with your State. You may post in any State thread that you can travel to. (ie. You live in Ohio but can travel to Pennsylvania, so post in both places since the States aren't listed in the same thread.) These listings are used by guests and members who need to find a new home for their crab so think of this post as an introduction into why you would be able to give a crab a great home. The Adoption Coordinator also looks to these listings first when we receive a message of someone who wants to rehome their crab.

All postings MUST start with a location (Nearest Large City, State) and how far you are willing to travel.

Remember to share your crabitat conditions and talk about how spoiled your crabs are. You are welcome to include a photo of your tanks, and you should talk about why you would be a great home for a rescued hermit crab. Your posting should be a honest description of your set-up and how you care for your crabs so that people who need to rehome their crab can find the best fit for their pet. You should also post whether it is better to contact you via PM or by e-mail. There is a template below if you need ideas of what to say, but it is not required.

Postings will be deleted if you are contacted about an adoption and there is no response or you are no longer able to adopt. We ask that all adopters check in at least once a year to make sure their posting contains current information. Please edit your post and list the date of your update before this so that your post will remain. We encourage you to check in often and list the current date so that Adoptees know that you are still actively looking for hermit crabs.

If you are no longer able or interested in taking hermit crabs, please update your listing to reflect this, or create a new posting to show that you are no longer an Adopter.



PERSONAL INFORMATION:
Do not post your phone number or your home address! To keep your e-mail safe from software that scans websites it would be best to list your e-mail address using [at] instead of @ and [dot] instead of a period. The other option is to post your e-mail address only in your profile and marking it so that people can contact you via e-mail. This will place a button on your post that will hide your e-mail from the software.


At the HCA, we want every crab to find a loving home. We also want our members to be safe. For the safety of our members, we recommend that all HCA adoptions meet the following guidelines:

1. Anyone under the age of 18 should arrange adoptions only when a parent or guardian can go with you. DON'T give out personal information (address, phone number, etc) to arrange an adoption; DO bring a parent or guardian to exchange crabs in person.

2. For all exchanges of crabs between members: DO meet in a busy public place. Shipping crabs is only advised during moderate weather and temperatures. It is never advised to go to someone's home to pick up or drop off crabs.

3. Please use common sense and be safe!
