Hermit crab patch questions

So I am excited this site is finally up, I haven't been able to check out out since i starting crabbing. So I was browsing thru everything they have and I'm so confused. The have stuff called surf n turf, soil supplement etc. Is it food or substrate? What on there do I need for the crabs, and what on there do I want? There are so many things I've never seen in any other site. Please help me

We like the dried sand dollars - extra calcium source and our hermies love it. We also have the crushed oyster shells which we sprinkle over and in the sub so molting hermies get a little extra calcium boost. I also think we also have the surf n turf, red white and blueberries, and wings and things - all of which our hermies chow down on. Oooo! And the pumpkin drops are a total favorite of theirs. Btw, we have also purchased from Crabotanicals which I believe they are also selling on HCP - can't go wrong with anything there. When our hermies came up without a BP, we got some of the carrotein and wheatin from them and I totally think it helped her go down for a successful molt

But which items go in the sub and which go in the food shells?

The crushed oyster shells we sprinkle and mixed into the sub and kept extra to sprinkle in food. The soil supplement - if we are going to be gone for a few days- I sprinkle on top of the sub. Otherwise I put it as an additional supplement for crabs in dish:) I'm sure u can mix some into the sub but I just like to sprinkle it into their fresh food - seems to make the fresh food more enticing for our guys! Everything else we pretty much just put in dishes. The dried sand dollars I keep on top of the sub at all times. I put 2 in about 6-8 weeks ago and they are almost all gone!

Surf n Turf is food that goes into the food dishes. It's by far one my colonies favorite mixtures. Soil supplement can either be fed as food in a dish or mixed in with your substrate for the crabs to nibble on.

If I put any of this stuff in my sub, will I have to change it in fear of mold or bacteria eventually?

I, personally, haven't had any issues with that while using the soil supplement. I would tend to think it helps with the good bacteria in the soil hence the hermies also benefiting from it since they occasionally munch on the soil.

I always feed everything to my guys in their bowl. They go crazy for the soil supplement! They also like the surf n' turf and pretty much anything else I get from there. You can't really go wrong! I definitely recommend the soil supplement and surf n' turf for starters
