HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hey everyone i'm gonna do a pet store review from Singapore(Plz take note that we are near the equator thus its more humid(80%all the time)and much warmer(27to34degrees Celsius and the store is open an open aired shop)Here are the details about the store


This pet store takes amazing care of their crabs,
-Good points!
•Crabs are sold at the cheapest price,I'v found so far($10 each)
•Water bowls were filled to the brim
•Water is declorinated,they use zoo med's reptisafe!
•Salt water is pretty good(its also an aquarium shop)
•There is a mister there!Amazing,i'v never seen a shop selling hermit crabs with a mister,in a humid country
•They feed the crabs apples around once a week
•There is a lid
•They allow people to actually interact with the crabs!
•I saw around 10-15 shells there!(wow)
•No painted shells
•They have around 1.5 inches of sand(sandcastle consistency)
•Their website shows the correct tips
•Many colours of ruggies
-Bad points
No pet shop is perfect
•Feeds commercial food everyday(looks like fish food to me)
•Water bowls aren't exactly very deep
•Some of the crabs feet tips were off(No limping/legless crabs)One of the crabs i bought had no tips,but grew back during his molt.
-My comment
•They take wonderful care of their crabs,They sell rainbow and red crabs too,I bought 2 of my crabs from them(5 months ago)They are still alive,i'm happy to have gotten them from that vendor!

It seems odd to feed fish food to hermit crabs, but al least they get some fresh food. 2.5 inches of sand is better than most places, but still not quite deep enough.

But theses conditions are pretty good, wish I could find a better place near me.

About the substrate. Keep in mind pet stores should not have deep substrate in their display tanks. It's a temporary home and I imagine it would be disastrous as I'm sure employees or even customers would end up digging crabs up. Ideally, they would have a tank in the back with deep substrate where crabs could be left to destress or molt.

Minimum “Safe” Pet Store Conditions:

Substrate Depth – this should be left very shallow at the pet store! A buried molting crab is going to be in danger from both the staff and from other crabs that are going to be arriving at the store hungry. There is no way they would be able to safely stay buried for the months it may take them to finish molting and be safe on the surface again.

I wish my store had those conditions i peeked at one yesterday. It looked like the theme was "desert wasteland crab graveyard." So terrible! There was one crab that was alive, but it seemed to be in the process of dying
I would have been delighted if these conditions were employed at that store!
