Deltona

Post by soilentgringa » Wed Feb 11, 2015 4:48 am

Does anyone know if Deltona's opening sizes listed are accurate? I am seeing a lot of 1.5-2 inch round openings listed for shells but am worried that they won't be correct.

In this thread, Megmaholm mentions not trusting their sizes. I haven't ordered from them in a while and when I did, they didn't provide opening sizes.

That's why I've been reluctant to place an order with Deltona. At least with Naples, both the shell sizes and opening sizes are posted and were true when I received the order. Deltona does have some nice shells, though, so it's tempting.

Even though the shells I got were smaller than I expected they worked out for the crab I bought them for. Every single shell that I bought (banded tapestries and polished green turbos) that supposedly had a 1.5" opening had a 1.25" opening. I also bought a jade turbo that was supposed to have a 2" opening and it was just under 1.75".

I didn't buy any of the smaller shells so I can't vouch for them, but they're so cheap it may be worth the risk. Naples and The Hermit Crab Patch have always been correct on their sizes.

LIVE HERMIT CRAB SHELL PURCHASING:

ALL SIZES LISTED IS THE WIDTH OF THE SHELL. (NOT OPENING SIZE OR HEIGHT).

Please email us a list of (12) or less shells you like (as we word them on the web page). We will get back to you on the opening sizes of each one. Thank you!

Also, please type us a note when placing the order in comments that the shells are for live crabs not craft use.
I've been updating HCA things for the new yaer including the shopping list and stumbled across that last night while double checking on international shipping.

On a couple shells they do list opening sizes as well. Or at least, it says opening...

I'm surprised and glad at their change though. They used to clearly state that they didn't cater to hermit crab owners (or something along those lines).

This was my breakdown of my gigantic order from them:

viewtopic.php?t=102262

It was awhile go so the details are fuzzy, but I wasn't disappointed. I used the HCA article on typical shells and their opening vs. overall sizes to decide which ones to get. (:

I ordered some shells from them and posted some pics of actual sizes along with listed size. Might give you an idea what to expect. (warning lots of large pics)

I went to Deltona's store known as Lakeland shells on Highway 92. The owner was very helpful! I just moved to Lakeland from Nj, I have had my hermit crabs for over a year. I woke up and had one going naked on and off for three days. I visited every pet store I could think of and could not find any shells he might have liked. I did have a few in there but he was not interested. Unfortunately, I lost my little guy :( not sure why but I did get many shells for my other ones. He has nice variety of shells. I have learned a lot from all of these posts.!!! Thank you! :P
