Petco's sales tax policy

I purchased a new 20 gallon tank after Christmas for my 4 crabs. I was taking advantage of the $1.00 a gallon sale they were having. When I checked out, the amount seemed high for the $22 purchase. The receipt showed that I was being charged 8% tax on the full price of the tank, 39.99. I was over charged. It was almost double the amount it should have been. When I talked with a manager, she said it was company policy to charge tax before taking the discount. I ended up getting a coupon for a discount on my next purchase, but I will not purchase anything else on sale there. Anyone else run into this before?

Different states have different tax laws. Depending on how the sale is being offered (for instance, if Petco is being reimbursed for the difference in cost by the manufacturer of the tanks), the state tax that is due can be for the full pre-sale amount and that is something the consumer is supposed to pay, not the store.

I know it feels like getting ripped off, but so long as they're following state laws, the one to issue a complaint to is your legislature! It would be out of Petco's hands.

That has never happened to me. I would have told them to keep the tank and left. But...I'm confrontational.

And constantly in different levels of a bad mood these days.

Yep, my Petco does the same thing. Aggravating since I didn't know ahead of time when I bought my 40B, but I figured I still got a good deal on it.

I saved money-$80 to be exact! One nice worker even pulled it out on a cart for us and put it in the car!
