Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread
Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread
I'm sorry, I've been away for too long. And many things have changed since that time.
No change: I still have my crabs! And there are still 25 of the breeding alive!
Unfortunately my account at photobucked does not exist any more, so most of my pictures here are gone.
My blog site is deleted to.
But I made a new site, where you still can find a description of my breeding from 2015 in English: http://landeinsiedlerkrebse.info/node/43
The other pages are in German.
Last year I had no larvae. But I'm looking forward to report this year, if something is happening.

Shame to see that blog go, I loved seeing the builds and whatnot... it was amazing how you put that together. But im glad the link is for us english speaking folk so all crabbing communities -english mostly.. - can benefit. Extremely thoughtful to do so.

@aussieJJDude: I will use some parts of the blog in this new website. The old blog was hacked and the software I used not save enough.
The new website is a kind of general guide about land living hermit crabs in German, because there was non till now. I'm just working on some text and pictures of my crabitat. Maybe I translate this text later in English, too. But for most parts of the guide there are already equal or even better websites in English.
@GotButterflies: You're welcome!
As a kind of satisfaction for my long absences I show you some pictures of my little ones.
Last years birthday party:
A day later:
This is from last year, too. They are very shy!

Ahhhhhh!
Adorable birthday photos!
Google translate is surprisingly good for biology topics, so long as it doesn't have to contend with idioms/slang.
Thanks for the new pictures!.... I had read your old posts with pleasure.

Do dried mealworms make up a large part of the food you offer them?
Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread
Sorry, about the very late answer!
During the last month I transferred the German Forum about hermits to my webspace and just finished the Domain- and bordtransfer.
And I have new larvae since a month!!! Another reason, why I don't have much time for forums.
OK, back to the larvae:
Since 14. August I have larvae again, not sure which species, most likely PP.
The first megalopa developt on 5. of September.
Till now 214 magalopas!
Like three years ago I feed the megalopas with crab-pellets and living artemia. I caught the bigger artemia in my tanks and transferred them to the tank, where the megalopas are living now.
Because megalopas like to eat each other, I tried to give them other Food to hunt.
Last time most people disbelieved, they would hunt a grown artemia. But today I made a photo spread about such a hunt.
Look at this:
dailymotion-video: Megalopa attacks artemia!
A few minutes later two megalopas started eating the artemia.

Dried mealworms as food are a exception. I feed them with fruits and fish and only sometimes dried food.Orin wrote:Do dried mealworms make up a large part of the food you offer them?

Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread
That's awesome to hear. I would assume if all species can hunt artemia, or if its only the species equip to handle it.

Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread
I guess that may be the reason, why last time so many survived the megalopa-stage.
Even if some hunt artemia, they don't hunt other megalopa or much less.
Fingers still crossed for this breeding-try.

Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread
About 600 megalopas separated. First of them are interested in shells.
And today... new larvae! About 2000 or more. I guess Violas this time. We'll see, hopefully.

Pictures,... OK, here are some pictures, facts and numbers.
2018/08/15 (day 2) 'some' larvae:
Since my last successful try in 2015 I don't use clear saltwater. As in pisciculture I use green-water (saltwater an many nannochloropsis salina). Feeding only fresh artemia. Artemia are allowed to crow up.
2018/08/26 (day 13) larvae in green-water:
2018/08/26 (day 13) setup:
Five tanks (vases in which the water circles perfectly).
2018/08/31 (day 18) grown larvae (z3 and z4 phase) in green-water:

2018/09/08 (day 26) many megalopas:
2018/09/08 (day 26) megalopas in transition tank:
2018/09/08 (day 26) megalopas in transition tank:
2018/09/16 (day 34) now three transition tanks and only one vase:
2018/09/16 (day 34/1) Good morning in my crabitat:
After that I cleaned two vase and now the are circling around.
Since I had not much time I cleaned the vases only once a week. I counted the larvae while cleaning.
Later on, since the first megalopa, I cleaned and counted each day. Here are the results:

Just a few minutes ago I saw a shell walking!
That marked one has eyes and legs.
