What Gender Are My Crabs?

Post by khs12 » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:46 pm

I have three crabs, two of which I think are girls but I'm not entirely sure. I took them out for just a moment to snap a few pictures for y'all.
Here is Nicky:

Here is Izzy:

Here is Patrice:
ImageIt looks to me like Patrice is a girl and I think Izzy is too, but I only see what looks like ONE hole on Izzy's right side.
Also, can anyone point out where there molt sacks are? I'm really nervous because I've had Nicky since Monday and Izzy and Patrice since Thursday and none of them are showing any signs of molting soon. I want them to get past any PPS they may have.:(

I'm actually realizing that Patrice is the only one fully out in the pictures so y'all might not be able the tell.:( I'm gonna leave em alone for now though.

None of them are out far enough to see. Have you seen this thread: viewtopic.php?p=852615#p852615?

My apologies, I accidentally put Izzy's picture twice. Patrice is now up!

Patrice is female.

Molt sacs are on their left side just behind their back leg.
The molting sac looks like a pencil-eraser sized growth that is attached to their soft abdomens on their left side. Depending on the species and the color of the crab, the molt sac can range from clear to grey to orange and sometimes other shades as well.

However, having one doesn't necessarily mean they'll be digging down to molt soon. Sometimes they have them for weeks and weeks before digging under. Some crabs seem to almost constantly have one.

Edit to add this link which has a good picture of a molt sac: http://www.hermitcrabpatch.com/Hermit-C ... -a/138.htm.

I'll try to get pictures tomorrow real quick! They all seem well adjusted, I just don't wanna bush their boundaries with too many pictures and holding them. :/
