I'm wondering, for the new hatchlings, did you keep the light on 24 hours a day like some others have done? Or did you give them regular day/night cycles? I'm torn as to which to do for my next attempt.

Hi there,
I've been turning the light off when I go to bed (sometimes 2am) but left it on 24hrs while I was away thur evening and all day Friday. Natalie suggested it might encourage the late comers to move out of the hot tub. :-) I also just transfered 2 mega who were still unshelled in the jars. There are spare shells in the pools in the transition tank.

Friday 23rd December 2016
Early evening update. I have just got home after being away for 24hrs. First thing I did when walking into the house was to check the babies. :D I was able to count 13 moving around on the sand or the top of the exit ramps. Another 6 or so still in the pools. 2 streakers in one pool hanging on the airstone and I think 1 in the other pool. There were also 2 still unshelled mega in the jars so they have gone into the pool with spare shells.

OMG I am actually starting to believe these little guys may even survive. I know there is still a long way to go yet but while there is movement there is life and hope.

Thanks for all the well wishes people. I am sharing here to help others if they decide to go down this road. The more who try the more success and common knowledge we will have on this very exciting topic. I know I couldn't have done it without the unwavering assistance 24/7 from Natalie Van Amstel. Thanks Nat.

Phone video of the playback on the screen of the camera. They have started to get colour. The one eating is holding a single grain of fine beta food.

Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017

Christmas Day 2016 It's official. I have first crabs.

I hardly believe it but I have actually managed on my 2nd attempt to raise land hermit crabs (Coenobita variabilis) in captivity. DOH was 4th December 2016. Tonight (Christmas Night) when I looked at photos taken in the last 24hours I feel that I have at least 3 first crabs. Natalie confirmed my observations. If I can do it others can also. I would encourage anyone who is in a position to give it a go to try. Tiring and stressful but so exciting and rewarding. Will post the photos when I can get them to my phone.
