Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017

Monday 9th January DAY 36

Sorry for not so many updates but nothing much changes from day to day now. However, last night I did have 2 change into bigger shells. I have put some even bigger shells in and they look huge but Natalie assures me that they will be fine. We will see.
It was funny watching the 2 in bigger shells walking around. They kept falling over just like toddlers learning to walk. I guess they need to get used to the new weight distribution and length/height of their shell choices.

Thanks for sharing this journey with me.

Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017

Day 47 and the crabs are doing so well. It is interesting to watch their antics and their growth. It seems to be those in smaller 1st shells who are choosing larger 2nd shells first. 6 have now gone to 2nd shells BUT I do have at least one who is in a 3rd shell.

This is one of the smaller ones still in a first shell that is under 5mm long. It is up the very top of a piece of Aussie native banksia tree from my garden. These grow in Broome. This is the very tallest climable thing in the tat other than the silicone of the joins. Its 13cm off the ground. That's the same as me climbing to 39.6M up a tree. Little dare devils.

Day 47

These 2 images show the size difference between them and this little one isn't even the smallest. The bigger one is in a 3rd shell choice (I think) or if not it went straight from a small shell to this monster one. That's a bit of tea tree bark on top of the stick. I put some Australian natives bits and pieces in the tat as they were chewing on stuff obviously looking for cellulose.
In the tank food wise now is mince, chicken, oat bran, green seaweed fresh collected from the beach, various native plant twigs and leaves, boiled egg, fibres off a pandanus seed pod and probably some other stuff.

Hi Gaby, Not sure but I did count 8 at once a couple of days ago. Haven't seen a few for a while but they could be doing a sneaky come up at night trick and be spending the days moulting.

Lol, crabs are funny like that. Glad to see they're doing well though, they're growing so fast!

Eeeeeeeeeee! Wow, this is my favourite thing on the internet - and I watched a video of a polarbear playing extatically with a Christmas tree today.

Day 50 (7 weeks)
Well I have just counted 7 out at once. I also have 8 tiny first shells I've collected when changes have happened so I'm pretty confident there may be a couple more still around.
