So they're at it again (guarding) - 5/25/15 eggs!

This area is dedicated to the pioneers who have captive bred crabs, and for those who wish to learn more or attempt it themselves. Also for inquiring about the gender of your crabs.

So they're at it again (guarding) - 5/25/15 eggs!

Post by CallaLily » Thu May 21, 2015 10:57 am

A little later than last year but I've been a little distracted so I may have only now noticed.

This year there seems to be 3 males in the running. Cinnamon and Collins again, and I think Chunk. This morning I found Cinnamon hovering in front of the cocohut with Chunk having just been flipped back next to him. I watched curiously for a little while and whenever Chunk tried to get up, Cinnamon would whip his antennae at him and he'd retreat back into his shell, claw open. So being curious, I pulled out the cocohut and sure enough, inside was Collins guarding Athelas. Cinnamon is bigger this year so I wonder how he'll do.

I never did find any eggs in that tank last year.

That is so fascinating!! I don't think any of my crabs are big enough to breed, but someday I hope to see stuff like that.
Crabbing since July 2014! 75 gallon with 12 Purple Pinchers.

Thank you. I found her at a yard sale in 2008. She's one of my favorites. :D

I understand! From what I've read it is very labor intensive. At least you know that your crabs are very happy!

I still feel kind of bad about it. Maybe sometime in the future I can collect the necessary supplies and make a go at it. But for now it's just nice to know they're healthy, happy crabbies. Bittersweet.

It's only bittersweet if she actually tries. When you find them smeared into the food dish you'll feel better.

I imagine finding them alive and swimming would be harder. I was just thinking about that a little while ago. I remember how sad it was last year with my E babies and they were already dead when I found them. Sounds awful but smeared in the food dish made me giggle.
