Hermit Crab With gray eggs!!!

Post by ChloeReyna » Tue Jul 28, 2015 10:08 pm

Hi so this is my first time owning a hermit crab. I've only had it for 3 days including today. I have Mr.Krabbs in a plastic critter keeper as I am waiting for my 10 gallon to arrive. Yesterday I was on YouTube looking at how to breed hermit crabs in captivity. Turns out today as I was picking up my hermit crab to place it into a bowl of sand so I can clean the cage, I saw gray eggs inside the shell. The eggs do not have eyes or anything yet. But I want to try to raise the eggs but I don't know what equipment and things I need to raise them. If any can please respond before the eggs "hatch" it would be such a great help!! thank you

If you are a beginner, I highly doubt you could raise them to land. It is an extremely pricey task, and also time consuming. only a handful of people in the world have done it. And guessing that you have a purple pincher it will be even harder. If you are intrested in attempting to raise them search up some of the breeding threads like Nats or Curlz. And also "Mr.Krabbs" is a Mrs, but I guess you already figured that out

Hi! Welcome to HCA. Are they eggs or is it a molt sac? A molt sac looks like a little grey or blackish blob hanging off of the side of the crab. Are you able to post a photo? I believe fertilized eggs are orange.

Here are links to two breeding threads.

Okay, sounds like eggs then. It is extremely labor intensive and expensive to attempt to raise larvae if they are even viable. This means almost around the clock monitoring and a lot of intense effort.
It sounds like your crabs were either in a very good environment prior to you obtaining them or have just been taken from the wild. They won't usually mate or have eggs unless conditions are spot on.
