Uh oh- eggs!

This area is dedicated to the pioneers who have captive bred crabs, and for those who wish to learn more or attempt it themselves. Also for inquiring about the gender of your crabs.

Uh oh- eggs!

Post by VenturaHermit » Tue Sep 07, 2021 9:11 pm

ImageHi,

I’ve just discovered one of my gal’s got grey eggs in her shell. She’s airing them out. Seems like a giant undertaking to try to hatch these. What should I do for her? Thanks for any advice.
After reading through the threads on this topic, I’ve set up a second salt water tank inside the crabitat. I’ve got an aerator coming today. If she lays the eggs in the water, I’ll give it a try!

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise so thoroughly. You guys are kind of amazing.

Wow, from what I've heard that's pretty rare ;-;

I don't know much about this personally, but I know that the YouTube channel CrabCentralStation just spent the summer trying to get the zoea that hatched out of their crab's eggs to survive. Its a very difficult and time consuming process. Apparently there has been only one recorded person in the world who has had success in trying to raise captive bred hermit crab babies to the point where they can be given up for adoption. (this is part of a plan to help reduce the amount of hermit crabs taken from the wild to be pets), and CrabCentralStation is doing their best to contribute to the information gathered on that front. They also have a lot of other good information about crab care. They are one of the only hermit crab YouTube channels that I trust haha.

If you want to look into it more they have a lot of information on their YouTube channel.
Here are some links that I hope will be helpful to you:

Sorry I don't know much about this topic myself, so if anyone wants to but in with more useful information please do haha
Good luck and have a great day!

Eggs in captivity are fairly common, it’s just keeping them alive that’s the hard part. Mary Akers is the most prominent but there have been several crabbers who’ve had success before she went big. Our care sheet is based on their experiences.

Thanks for providing more information. I don't know a ton about this topic, but wanted to provide the little information that I did know. Thanks for correcting me though!

Have a great day! Also good luck with your eggs!

Thanks so much for the information! I’m not getting my hopes up, but I’ll give it a go. I haven’t seen her for the last two days, so not sure what she’s up to.
I’ll keep you posted!
