Ladybug in crabitat

Post by Hermie225 » Mon Oct 31, 2016 12:49 pm

It's that time of year where, for reasons unknown, ladybugs swarm into my house. They get through the cracks of the very old windows and are usually not bothersome to us at all.
Until I looked into the tank this morning to find one lone ladybug crawling it's way over to the food dish lol.
My question is, are ladybugs in anyway harmful? I did take it out and release it outside, but idk how they breed or anything like that.

If it was just one I wouldn't worry, but like any bug they could probably swarm a crabitat. I don't know if they would be necessarily harmful, but they might get annoying to you and the crabs.

Okay good to know! The invasion should be about over since it's getting to be freezing over night more and more often here in MA.

Ladybugs are considered poisonous to some animals... Probably knowing crabs they can eat them without worry, but the best thing to do is to seal up the tank - like a mesh on top for example - to reduce "contact time" between the species (just to be on the safe side).

I have a plexiglass lid, the darn thing must have slipped thru when I had it open for maintenance. Luckily that's the only one I've seen and with winter rapidly approaching I haven't seen any bugs inside or out in about a week.
