I'm thinking so. After we bought the coco base layer we had an flys all over the place more then we had before. We would kill a ton of them and they would just keep coming back. We don't leave food out and the trash is taken out daily so we couldn't figure it out.
Until I went digging for our littlest crab to ensure he was still alive as he doesn't come out to often with the two larger crabs in then tank now. That's when I found the things, I thought maybe crab poop but after a Google search figured out it wasn't that. Then I shined my flashlight on it and notice it was empty and only logical thing is it must be flys eggs.
Then I found out about potted fly which like to bread in most warm dirt.....aka the coco base which has a tank heater and the crabs help spill water all over the place. Hung a fly strip by the crab tank and one in the kitchen and on in the front room, one or two in the kitchen, none in the front room and the entire strip was filled by the tank. Then I found this pic online which Mathes the egg I found

What is this in my crab tank
Re: What is this in my crab tank
The new questions is do I switch to sand for my crabs???? I want them to be healthy and happy.
Also how much do crabs eat? How small does the pieces have to be.
I've tried peanut butter and they don't seem to care for it, carrots, orange, oats...nothing seems to be to their liking. The stuff from the store they didn't seem to eat, yet they are to grabbing at the air or anything as if they are hungry.....
Sorry for all the questions again I just want them to be happy and healthy

Re: What is this in my crab tank
The flies aren't harmful to the crabs and once you get them under control it probably wont be much of an issue. But if they're really bugging you and you can't get it under control, you can try only play sand or maybe with just a small amount of cocofiber mixed in.
They eat very little really and if they're new they're probably still adjusting. Keep offering them a variety of safe foods in small amounts and they will eat.
