HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hi. I'm noticing a lot more booklice in my tank around where their food is kept.

I know that these walking grains of sand are harmless and I have noticed them in my tank before, but they've had a population increase recently and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to lessen there numbers before I'm at Woodlice Woodstock levels.

They are mainly in front of the heat mat by the food, which is mainly of the dried variety since my crabs have been spending most of their time underground. One may be molting.

Any hints tips or tricks would be appreciated.

They’re going after the food so that’s probably the first place to start. Stick to dry and dehydrated foods for a bit since those are less attractive, and reading your post again it looks like you’re already doing that. You may also consider only offering food for limited times before removing, especially if offering fresh produce and other smelly goods

To remove them directly you can also place leaves, pieces of wood, or fresh food on the substrate and then remove after a large number have accumulated on or under it. They’re likely funneling in from around your home so they’ll never disappear entirely
