Bugs inevitable?

Post by ivymr » Fri Jul 21, 2023 4:13 pm

I did a total deep clean/substrate swap after finding some ants in my tank (not quite an infestation, but more than I was comfortable with). I cleaned the tank and surrounding areas with vinegar, sprayed the area with peppermint, all new substrate, boiled what I could and replaced what I couldn't, made a ring of vaseline around the tank and on all the hoses and cords going in or nearby. THERE'S STILL ANTS! Admittedly much fewer, but still frustrating. I've also found 2 small beetles in the substrate and some tiny white bugs in their food dishes. I can't make the lid airtight because of the hose and cords but even if I got rid of those things I would be worried about ventilation. So is it just normal/inevitable to have a certain amount of bugs in your tank?

Most of the little bugs that are in the tank are harmless to the crabs - except of course a lot of ants.
Where are the ants getting into your house from?

Since the deep clean a few weeks ago I've only seen 1 or 2 ants at a time, a handful of times. Obviously there's more in there that I'm not seeing, but it's not like the tank is crawling with them. It's an old house near the woods, so they come in all the crannies but usually keep near the kitchen which is on a different floor. We hardly see any in the tank room which is why it's so baffling!

We've tried spraying outside and we've got terro bait around the house but they always come back. Maybe an airtight lid is the only solution but logistically so annoying
