Isopods
Re: Isopods
I have my breeding colony in a 56 qt tote. You don't have to have one that big; just make sure it's at least 3 gals. I drilled holes in the lid for air flow. I have ee with oak leaves on top, some moss on one side, and oak log halves for hiding. You don't have to feed them with it setup like this but I put leftover food from my crabitat in there for extra food source. Make sure you mist it daily so they'll have water to drink. Oh and they need a calcium source of some sort since they are crustaceans and molt like our crabs do. Have fun and good luck!

Thanks guys I'll give it a whirl! Also how long so they typically last in the crab tank before I should add more?

Re: Isopods
They are pretty hardy, I transfer 5-10 into my crab tank every week.

Re: Isopods
Daws is correct, you have to have a minimum of 3 gallons to breed them successfully. Here is the guide: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 26&t=92538
I threw several orders into each of my crabitats, and they have bred successfully in there. At first I started breeding them, but I had issues with mold in my tote that I had for them. I didn't drill holes in the top, and I had a few different type of bugs in there besides isopods. I used a 3 gallon. I wish I had gotten a bigger tote for them.

Re: Isopods
They really are cute and fun to watch! A lot of people like the Zebra ones, but I like the powder blue ones. They are very active! I see them out Day and night! Crab poo is a rare sighting in my crabitats and that's a great thing!KayedeeLove<3 wrote:That's exactly what I needed GB I will deff put this to good use!

Re: Isopods
I grabbed all of my isopods from my back yard- it gets a lot colder out there than a crabbie tank and even the inside of my house so I haven't been using a heater- that do you think? I think that other species require more heat due to geo location.GotButterflies wrote:Just like the crabsDid you check isopod connection?

Re: Isopods
The isopod care guide says 70-85. Here is the guide: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 26&t=92538 I purchased a little zoo med heater for mine. (I had used a plastic tote). Now all of mine are in the crabitats. Doing great and breeding!Hermiearth wrote:I grabbed all of my isopods from my back yard- it gets a lot colder out there than a crabbie tank and even the inside of my house so I haven't been using a heater- that do you think? So amazing how long did it take to grow your colony that size?!
