To Keep Isolated Or Not...?

Post by Falcone » Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:40 pm

A couple months ago, while introducing a new crab to my group, there was a fight and one of my crabs lost a leg as well as his large pincher in a shell war. He was instantly put into a tank alone as i was unsure of leaving him with the other crabs (the aggressor, named Hannibal, didn't show any signs of agression towards the other crabs so i left him in the tank with the others and kept an eye on him).
After about three weeks i put Sheldon (the one who lost limbs) in a large tank with one of the other hermies (Newb) who seems to be the most docile one i have. They were fine until Newb went to molt. Then Sheldon tried to big him up so i put Sheldon back in his isolation tank.
After Newb had completed his molt and had time to settle i tried reintroducing them, but this ended with Sheldon on his back and Newb climbing over him, which made me nervous as Sheldon cant really defend himself without his claw.
Should i keep Sheldon on his own until his pincher comes back? Or, in the case i were to get a new, smaller crab who wouldnt be as much of a threat to him, do you think it would be better to try and keep him in company?

Sheldon should be due for a molt any time now which could explain the last bit of agression you saw. If it were one of mine, I'd keep him isolated until he does molt, and then try introductions again after everyone gets a quick bath.
