Post by sungpean » Sun Mar 29, 2020 3:40 am

I just found out he sometimes doing this and holding its position just like this for a long time. Is this a normal behavior or does it needs some kind of treat?

I've seen mine do this. Always freaks me out. I think they're going to fall out of their shell. Maybe they're airing out?

I believe they do this when they clean out their shells of sand and poop. They have tiny legs near their abdomens and gills they use to push push everything out. These legs are creepy looking, we call them alien arms.

It's not that unusual for them to rest in this kind of position! It looks awkward but it doesn't seem to bother them.

Very creepy, but it doesn't seem to bother them as much as it bothers their owners.

I think I figured out why he did this. So, I've been watching him and he has been doing this several time near the water. As far as I know he didn't go into the water(the water is salt water). Then he dug up, burrow down the substrate and he stays until now. I think he was preparing for molting. I heard hermit crab holds moisture to soften his exoskeleton and I think he was doingit to get ready for molting.

Best wishes if your crab molts, then! My crabs just sit out of there shells sometimes too, and I assume, like Motörcrab said, when they're cleaning their shells of poop/sand. One time I had mine out and it was kind of just sitting, and I let it just chill on the blanket it was on. A few minutes later it started moving around and it left a little pile of poop where it was! They always want to go when I let them out!
