And I guess since it's only been a week and a half, I should just try and be patient to see if he comes up. It's so hard!

If he is molting, I would wait on the crab mate. It's not a good idea to add crabs while you have a guy under, because the newbie might go for a dig and they could collide. Keep an eye on him for a week, and if he doesn't resurface at all (listen for scratching sounds at night) then he's probably molting.

The large volume of substrate we use is specifically for protecting molters. If the chances of meeting underground were that great we wouldn’t keep multiple crabs in a tank.
