Can I use sterilized dirt as a substrate?

I was wondering if I could use regular cooked dirt as a substrate that my moss could actually grow in.

What, like the soil you dig up outside or potting soil from the store? Either way keep in mind there’s a risk of contamination from chemicals or heavy metals.

As well as what Joe said, it would be hard to get either one to be 'sand castle' consistency instead of just turning to mud. Crabs can't build tunnels and caves in mud.
