Starfish turning orange??

Starfish turning orange??

So i recently went to hawwii for a vacation qnd bought a dried starfish for ny hermit crabs, at first they loved it but ive noticed that the starfish stinks, and i thought it was hust the smell so i dunked it in water(declorinated) and put it back. Today i noticed it started turning orange, sobi took it out of the crabitat and bot idk what to do with it is it safe to put in the crabitat??

What color was it when it was purchased? Those are often bleached, but if it’s changing colors and smelling bad it may not have been preserved properly

it was an off white when purchased, and when i took it out of the tank it gradually stopped smelling, so i thought it was the humidity or smth, as long as its not coming back to life lol

Probably safe, you just have a decomposing sea star, just like the beach
