Re: Mites

For example, this morning, just before leaving for work I checked on them. My big one was nearly on top of the little one, trying to roll her around, and she was tucked as far back in her shell as she could be.
These two crabs never really did get along. My crab that passed away was the jumbo crab’s Bestie. The two of them would always come up at the same time while the other one would stay under, and if all three of them were up at the same time, the two besties would always be together. Then the other one would always be by herself. But since my other crab passed away, they both seem to Bury, and then come back up about the same time. Then the jumbo will often try to kick the little one off of whatever toy or rock she’s on.
I currently only have a 20 gallon tank and I am trying my hardest to find a larger tank. I think that will help a lot. Plus my jumbo is getting too big for this tank. I guess I just need to know if I should separate them? I don’t know what’s causing the aggression ?

Also, my little one seems really pale in color? I feed them a healthy diet. Always give them different fruits and vegetables, eggs, and egg shells, oatmeal, so they’re getting protein. The only thing that I wish I gave them more of, is real meat. But the fruits are normally known to boost color? I didn’t know if you might have any guidance or knowledge as to what would be draining her color? At one point I thought maybe there was mold? I’ll try to get a better close-up picture for you, of her

Foods don't really affect color.

Crabs need animal protein daily. What you are feeding likely isn't providing enough protein. You can get dried dog/ cat treats that are meat only, dried crickets, dried meal worms, dried shrimp - all at the pet store to add to their protein.

Mold is not harmful to crabs, you just remove it if you see any moldy bits of food etc.

Do they have lots of shells to choose from?

Yes plenty of shells. I don’t think I could fit anymore? I feed them these Calci Worms that I get from the land hermit crab association. But I didn’t know about the cat and dog food thing.

I have been thinking about getting another crab? Once I’m able to get a much larger tank, and get it set up. I feel like they did much better when there was three.

I really appreciate all of your advice. You’ve really put me at ease! In a way I have not been since I got our crabs. Like most, I got them on vacation in Myrtle Beach. Talked into it by my daughter and the sales clerk. Now they are my babies. I wish I knew then what I know now. I really want to become an advocate for land hermit crabs. After I got home with them and did all my research, I was appalled about what I learned in regards the retail business! However, my creams and I made it through, and I was able to keep them alive and even helped them thrive. Now they are a part of my family and I am learning every day. I hope you don’t mind if I reach out from time to time?

Sorry, I can't really see what are mites in there. If they are on the sand and in the food, they won't be harmful to your crabs.
I can't remember if I posted the link to the 'mites' care sheet - apologies if this is a repeat.
