Worried about my new crab please help

Post by scarlet » Wed Sep 13, 2017 2:33 pm

I have a new hermit crab and I don't know what is wrong with him he doesn't interact with the others and he is always buried and hardly ever goes out. He arrived with part of his a limb missing and it says to isolate them but I'm not sure of he is beging to molt or is dying and I don't know if I should isolate him or take some sand out of my tank so he won't keep buring himself. I've had him for about a week and he hasn't been active that I know of and refuses to come out of the sand or his shell. My other crabs aren't like that they are extremely active and playful. I don't know what I should to help him. Please help

Hi!

You should never dig up a crab while it's buried. They need to do this to molt. The lost limbs will regenerate when the crab molts.

Can you fill this out so we can help you figure out what's going on?

Let him dig down and do his thing and leave him be. He's either trying to destress or molt or both.
Livin' the Crazy crab life :P

Please fill out the emergency template that Soilentgringa posted so that we can help you. Substrate needs to be a minimum of 6" or three times the height of your largest crab (whichever is deeper is what it needs to be). It should consist of Playsand and ecoearth 5:1 ratio and mixed with dechlorinated msw or dechlorinated fw to make it sandcastle consistency. Definitely let him dig, and please never dig a crab up. :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

He's probably trying to destress. When I got my two crabs one was active and shell changed right away. My other crab, however, dug down and didn't come up until a month later to change shells, he dug down again and stayed down for 2 more months.
He's incredibly active now!
