The new aquarium i bought online smells chemical-ey, almost like stale clothes or a laundry room. Will just water fix this?
can i use diluted bleach? or even just diluted soap? or would neither of these be crab-safe?

I would not use either of those chemicals. Use a mild solution of white vinager and rinse it well.

Vinegar can work some miracles. I used it to clean my 29 gal tank after I got it from a lady who used it for a turtle. Once I was done in no longer smelled like turtle nor had the nasty stains around the side.

Dishsoap is fine and will remove any surface residue, rinse well.
Bleach is fine and will sterilize, rinse well and let air dry until any smells go away.
White vinegar is fine, and usually does a good job of removing odors. Dry well and let air out.

1 part bleach to 10 parts water is a typical sanitizing solution for stuff. Just rinse well like Wode said.
