Really need help with a question about traveling

Post by Acohen » Thu Jun 25, 2020 11:20 am

We just gots two hermit crabs on Monday. They’ve been in their new tank since Tuesday night. I’m using damp hermie sand mixed with hermie soil on one side and just hermie soil on the other side. I’m keeping humidity & temp In correct range, and they have a variety of food to choose from and salt & fresh water. They’ve just been hiding since they went in the new tank. One is buried and the other is laying on top of them.
I’m traveling for about 5 days next week and I don’t know if I should Just leave them at home in the tank and buy a humidifier and leave a bunch of food, or if I should dig them up and take them with me!

I know you should ever dig up a crab, but what if something happens when I’m gone?
Thank you so much for any advice!

That’s exactly what I am doing. Going to Kelowna for 5 days next week. There would really be no reason to dig them up. Just give them some fresh fresh water and salt water and for food I just used some dry food mixes I ordered off of fb. I have a camera set up also just to be safe but it is not necessary for only 5 days.

I travel 3 or 4 times a year, for a week at a time. I fill up the water dishes, and leave a bunch of dried foods for them. I leave things that will last longer in separate bowls (only thought of this recently tho, LOL), like dried leaves and egg shells. A lot of the dried foods are moldy by the time I get back, but that's not a problem for the crabs.

Thank you! You leave a humidifier and heater on for them when you go? Maintaining the temperature and humidity are my main concerns.

With my lid sealed, the temp and humidity stay in the safe range. I do leave a corner open for airflow. But I don't have a humidifier. I use play sand and EE mixed, and moistened. I have never used a moss pit, but some people find that also helps with humidity.

A humidifier isn't a bad idea, especially if your humidity doesn't stay constant, but I would also get a timer or hygrostat so it doesn't drop too much water at once.

Otherwise the crabs will be fine as long as they have water during the time you're gone.
