Molting

Post by Sandybastion » Sat Jan 09, 2021 1:43 am

 how do you know if your hermit crab is done molting and I had to separate my other crab because I have a 5 gallon tank for 2 crabs . I was wondering if it was ok to have two hermit crabs in a five gallon tank while one is molting .

If your substrate is deep enough it should be fine. When the substrate is shallow if is easy for other crabs in the tank to dig them up and disturb them! :)

A crab needs to shed it's exo, eat it, and harden up again. Did your crab surface molt? Or do you mean that the molting crab is still under ground?

A 5 gallon is only big enough for very very small crabs.
Here is the HCA guide for how many crabs in what size of tank.

If it is under ground, leave it alone. Do not dig or go looking for it, just wait for it to come back up on it's own.
