HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster I’m hoping to buy a used aquarium stand tomorrow. It’s sturdy, which is good. But it definitely looks well used. I’d like to refinish it (sand, paint, seal). Have any of you done this? If so, how long did you wait before you placed your crabitat on it? Any suggestions for hermie safe materials? Thanks in advance for any and all advice

I've done it several times! It will depend on your finish on how long you'll want to wait. I wasn't even worried about the crabs, *I* couldn't stand the smell until they were well cured. Regular hosuepaint is good within a couple of days, low or no VOC will be ready once it's dry. Something more sturdy like wood sealant or oil base will take longer to air out. I waited three weeks when I did my Ruggie's stand with oil based paint because of the smell, but it also came out the best and has lasted the best as well. It doesn't get water damage either.
