Painted Shells and Crabs
2 of my hermit crabs have been in painted shells for as long as I’ve had them. I am very aware that painted shells are bad for the crabs. I cannot get them to change shells. What do I do?

Be sure you are providing them with plenty of options and they will take care of the rest in time. Read up on which shells are best for your species. If you have purple pinchers, turbos are the best.

Re: Painted Shells and Crabs
I've had Ecuadorians that stayed for years in painted shells! Purple pinchers tend to change more often once they start growing, but I still had one stay in a glazed shell for over 10 months. It's not the end of the world if they don't change, but making sure that the type and size of new shells is proper for them is important.
