HCA: Hermit Crab Association

i was wondering if it would be safe to bring my hermit crabs out onto the driveway to crawl around and explore new places, but was not sure if it was safe for the hermies. it has been in the 80-90s where i live, and im not sure if that is too hot, given we keep the temp 75 indoors and it might be a very sudden change in temp for them. i have an extra tank i will put them in and let one or two crawl around at a time so i can keep track of them, anything else i need to do before letting them go outside or should i just play it safe and keep them indoors.

Concrete and asphalt can heat up in the hot sun, so be careful where you put the crabs. A pesticide-free lawn would be better

Okay, thanks, i also read somewhere u should mist their gill area? Is that needed? I did just to play it safe the first time i took them out, but i was not sure if 20min of low humidity is bad for them, i do put a wader fish near them so they can get to if just in case

Inland species such as PPs will carry water in their shells to keep their gills moist so they’ll be okay down to 60% RH if they have access to water

Coastal species such as Es would probably benefit from the extra sprays of only because they don’t normally go into drier areas in the wild
