Holidays?

Post by millt43 » Wed Jul 24, 2024 8:35 am

I'm getting my crabs today! I have their pps environment all set up! I'm super excited!

My question is this...I am a school teacher and I would like to have Hermit crabs as a class pet. Is it possible to leave them at school for the Christmas holidays? The holidays total up to about 16 days...OR can I bring them home with me? (If I do this I will have a separate crabitat all set up for them when they get here). Would bringing them home stress them out too much?

Also, we have Thanksgiving and Spring Breaks....those are bout 9 days each.

Anyone have any advice?

For the 16 day long break I would take them home just to be safe unless if you can check in on them on day 7 (so you can give them fresh food and check their water bowls). For the 9 day breaks I think it would be fine to leave them. Their food will definitely get gross and a little bit moldy but you can get leaf litter to put in their tank so they can have a back up option for it the food gets too gross.

I would tend to leave them, and just go in at the half way mark to change the food and water dishes. I would leave dried foods, not fresh - they will be moldy when you get back, but it isn't harmful to the crabs. Edit to add- this is for the 16 day break. I agree that the 9 day breaks should be just fine.
You could consider bringing them home, but if anyone is underground molting, you would need to leave them anyways.
