Am I doing a good job with their food?
Hello! I have had my two hermit crabs for around two years now and I just want to check if I am doing a good job with their food. When I first got them, I made the mistake of getting them commercial food (JurrasiDiet). After some time, I realized it was bad for them and started making them fresh food myself. I made sure to give them protein, grain, fruit, calcium, and a yummy treat. That wasn’t manageable for a long time because it was a lot of work. I just recently switched to Just2OldCrabs and my crabs seem to be liking it! I’ve been adding a fresh berry every day or two recently. I am just checking to make sure I am doing a good job with their food. Also, what does it mean if a crab sits in their food dish for a long time? Ex:30mins. Are they just slow eaters? Thank you! ![bigsmile ](./images/smilies/bigsmile.gif)

They might just be slow eaters, or they might have fallen asleep, or they might be guarding the bowl so nobody else can get into it, or they might be pooping!
Crabs do best with a varied diet, and they can eat many of the same things we do. Some people feed only dried foods or only fresh foods, but many of us feed a bit of each. Keep giving the dried foods, and add some things other than just the berries - it doesn't have to be complicated, just a chunk of a veggie or fruit you are eating, a pinch of grains like oatmeal or rice, a few seeds or nuts, a piece of meat, a bit of egg or egg shells. In summer I also pick leaves and flowers from around my yard, since we don't use any chemicals.

Thanks! I will try to add more fresh foods like those. I’ll look at the food list on this website for more things I can add to their food dish. I don’t think my crabs would be guarding the dish because I have never seen any aggressive behavior. My crabs get along pretty well. Edit: One crab is a little pushy though. My other crab is fine with that and there is rarely aggressive behaviour. You’re right, they probably fell asleep. They are very active and fun to watch! Thank you!
